For many businesses, their entire SEO campaign is focused around a certain location. Local SEO is just as powerful in 2024 as it has ever been, and there are many ways business owners throughout the UK and beyond are getting seen by people close to them in search engine results.

When doing local SEO, the focus shifts from reaching the number 1 ranking, to the map pack. This is something everyone has seen and probably interacted with at some point, but how did that pizza restaurant down the road get to the top of the list?

Well, luckily for any SEO out there, the same methods and processes we have discussed throughout this guide still help in boosting your business and climbing the rankings, but when it comes to the map pack, attention shifts to your Google My Business profile.

Google likes to know the local businesses it is sending it’s users to is treating them well, and that’s why a bunch of five star reviews is a great way to boost your rankings and get to the top of the map pack. How do you get these reviews? Well that’s down to the business themselves, but it always helps to give customers a push in the right direction with a link straight to the review portal or even an incentive for leaving one.

Information (keywords) 

In the world of Google Business Profiles, information is key. From your opening hours to your accessibility, there is a wide range of data points and information that can be added. In your business description, write an accurate portrayal of your company, and if you can throw in some target keywords then even better. The more information you can provide, the more Google will get to know your business and trust it (remember EEAT?)

Consistency

Nowadays, most businesses are featured across many directories. One of these will be your Google Business Profile, and on this (as well as the others) try and keep your information consistent. If your contact details, opening hours, address, and more are mixed up then this can cause confusion for search engines and users, which is never good.

Communication

Being active and appreciative goes a long way on a Google Business Profile. Respond to customers, thanking them for good reviews and resolving any issues. If questions are asked, answer them promptly and provide good results. 

The map pack plays a huge role in local SEO, providing all the information a user needs to use and interact with your business.

  • NAP citations: NAP stands for name, address and phone number, and if you can pick up these in local directories and websites it can help to boost your authority and in turn, your rankings.
  • Optimisation: Search engines are clever, but they only know what you tell them. If you cover many locations or just one, provide the information to showcase this. For multiple places, create a page for each, giving all of the details Google needs to rank each one individually.
  • Build local links: We’ve discussed citations, but there are other ways to pick up backlinks. Reach out to local newspapers, publications, and more to see if they will cover your business, providing reviews or articles that can then link back to your site.
