In hindsight, we can all agree that 2016 should never have happened, right?
We’ve finally come to the end of what has arguably been a roller coaster of a year. There have been many ups and downs and outright confusion as to what on earth actually happened this year. Was it a dream? Unfortunately not. Although there has been plenty to mourn this year, with the passing of many beloved celebrities, Brexit and the US Election; it’s not all doom and gloom.
Needless to say 2016 has seen its fair share of viral social media posts that have kept us entertained, but what were the best viral trends that swept across all our favourite social platforms and created a fuss?
Check out our favourites below!
#PokémonGO – Do you remember the time some months ago when hundreds of thousands of people had their eyes glued to their mobiles (more than usual), wandering around whilst look a little lost and throwing all their will into catching imaginary beings? Yes, well that was PokémonGO.
The dedication some players had for the app, one man in the US walked around 95 miles to capture all of the Pokémon, and its overall popularity in America meant all of us in the UK were itching to get our walking shoes on and do the most exercise we’ve done in our lives. And then it came, swept the nation as expected, only for the hubub to dissipate after a week… but we’re still waiting for HarryPotterGO.
#LeoWinsAnOscar – It’s been quite a while since the actor received the award, but we assure you it was this year! It finally happened – Leonardo DiCaprio won the Oscar he deserved for his role in the epic, The Revenant. Twitter went into a frenzy and, of course, the memes of him losing out to an Oscar in the past were replaced with new ones, mostly of his anticipation and quips at getting his name engraved onto the award.
#HoneyG – Unless you’ve completely disassociated yourself with The X Factor, you’ll have heard of Honey G. Love her or loathe her, you cannot deny that she got the entire nation talking. Whether she was serious about her goal in achieving a career as a ‘rap artist’ through The X Factor, or not; the contestant managed to remain firmly in the Live Shows for 7 weeks before being sent home in the bottom two. Were you the more happier for it?
#MannequinChallenge – The Mannequin Challenge wasn’t your regular social media challenge (think the Bottle Flip Challenge and Shuffling), it saw the likes of James Corden’s The Late Late Show take part, The X Factor (twice! One backstage and another during, ironically, Honey G’s performance) and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!. All of these are worth checking out, they don’t disappoint.
